The Ministry of Education has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to abolish the Teacher Licensure Examinations by August 30, 2025. This decision was announced by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the new governing board of the NTC on July 15, 2025.
The ministry plans to introduce a new framework that emphasizes academic training, supervised practicum, and structured mentorship, replacing the current exam-based system.
Candidates who have previously failed the licensure exams will have a final opportunity to re-sit them before the phase-out takes full effect, with the last exam session scheduled to conclude by August 30, 2025.
Critics argue that the exam’s structure failed to adequately assess practical teaching skills, focusing instead on theoretical knowledge. This decision aims to address concerns about accessibility, fairness, and teacher quality.
The abolition of the Teacher Licensure Exams may lead to a more practical and hands-on approach to teacher training.
However, there’s a risk that the new system could lack consistency or rigor without a clear alternative in place.
The NTC will need to develop transparent and robust assessment mechanisms to ensure teacher quality isn’t compromised.
