The recent “assault” between Akwatia and NDC’s Asiedu Nketiah isn’t about a physical altercation between the two, but rather a political standoff. Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that his party will contest the Akwatia constituency in the upcoming by-election, dismissing suggestions that it’s a safe seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the party’s commitment to winning the Akwatia seat, stating that they’ve filed candidates in all 276 constituencies with the intention of winning, not just participating.

He described Akwatia as a swing constituency, implying that the seat can go either way, and the NDC is determined to put up a strong fight.

Asiedu Nketiah assured the police that the NDC will cooperate to ensure a peaceful election, but warned that if the police fail to act against perpetrators of violence, the party may take matters into its own hands.

A tense situation unfolded when Asiedu Nketiah led a delegation to pay respects to the late Ernest Kumi, former MP for Akwatia, at his one-week observance. NPP supporters allegedly attempted to physically confront NDC supporters, leading to a heated exchange. The NDC has since demanded the arrest and prosecution of those involved, giving the police until September 1, 2025, to act.

The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025, was triggered by the death of Ernest Kumi. The NDC and NPP are gearing up for a fierce contest, with Asiedu Nketiah reiterating that his party will not interfere with police work during the election, emphasizing that security is the police’s responsibility.
