The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has cut off government support to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and declared it “non-existent” on its official portal. This decision was made due to UCC’s failure to comply with GTEC’s directives regarding the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
The reasons for the Cut-Off due to UCC’s disregard for a High Court injunction restraining the university’s Governing Council from taking any action on Prof. Boampong’s appointment.
Prof. Boampong’s continued stay in office despite reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.
The suspension of all major engagements with UCC, including:
GTEC will no longer process UCC’s programme accreditation requests
Also UCC will not receive government funding for salaries as well as UCC will not receive funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund.
The staff of UCC will not receive research and book allowances. Also, UCC will not be able to process post-retirement contracts.
UCC will again not receive financial clearance for recruitment.
GTEC has directed Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, to serve as Acting Vice-Chancellor, pending the resolution of the legal dispute currently before the Cape Coast High Court. The directive is to remain in effect until UCC proves full compliance with the Commission’s orders.
