The Black Queens of Ghana claimed the bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The match, held on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, ended 1-1 after regular time.

The South Africans took the lead through Nonhlanhla Mthandi’s goal in the 45th minute, but Ghana equalized in the 68th minute with an own goal from South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, attributed to Alice Kusi’s pressure.

Ghana won the penalty shootout 4-3, with Nancy Amoah scoring the winning penalty. Amoah, a 19-year-old midfielder, honored Liverpool’s late player Diogo Jota with a heartfelt tribute after scoring the winning penalty.

The Black Queens’ bronze medal win marks a significant achievement for Ghanaian women’s football, showcasing the team’s growth and determination. The Black Queens have never won the competition before, and hence, their pursuit for the WAfcon trophy still continues.
