The Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has clarified that Ghana did not vote on a motion supporting LGBTQI+ rights at the 59th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The minister emphasized that the vote was actually about renewing the mandate of an Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, not about endorsing LGBTQI+ rights.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that there was no vote on supporting LGBTQI+ activities, contrary to media reports.

Ghana abstained from a vote on extending the tenure of experts on the Human Rights Council, guided by the principles enshrined in Chapter 5, Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits discrimination.

The Ministry assured citizens that Ghana remains committed to upholding its cultural and constitutional values

The minister’s clarification aims to correct misrepresentations and provide an accurate understanding of Ghana’s stance on the issue
